Olivier Dhénin Hữu – metteur en scène

Olivier Dhénin Hữu est auteur de théâtre et poésie, dramaturge et metteur en scène. Parallèlement à ses études à Paris 7 (DEA en Histoire et Sémiologie du texte et de l’image), il étudie la musique au Conservatoire national de région d’Amiens dont il est diplômé en 2004. De 2006 à 2008 il officie à la coordination artistique du Théâtre du Châtelet. De 2013 à 2015 il est le collaborateur artistique d’Eric Vigner, directeur du Centre dramatique national de Bretagne. Nommé artiste-associé à la Scène Watteau en 2022, Olivier Dhénin Hữu est également lauréat du programme Villa Saïgon de l’Institut français pour la composition de PAYSAGE DANS L’OUBLI oratorio dramatique imaginé avec la musicienne italienne Nigji Sanges Monticelli dont la création aura lieu à l’Opéra de Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville en 2023.

En 2008 il met en scène LA MORT DE TINTAGILES de Maeterlinck au Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles. Il crée également ORPHELINS de Rainer-Maria Rilke à la Cartoucherie de Vincennes (Théâtre du Chaudron, 2010), LA FÊTE ÉTRANGE d’après Alain-Fournier pour le centenaire du « Grand Meaulnes » (Rochefort, Théâtre de la Coupe d’Or, 2013), JULIUS CÆSAR JONES de Malcolm Williamson (Opéra de Vichy, 2014), CORRESPONDANCES, cycle de textes & musiques autour de TRISTAN ET ISOLDE de Richard Wagner (CDDB-Théâtre de Lorient, 2015), PÊCHEUR D’ISLANDE d’après Loti (Rochefort Théâtre de la Coupe d’Or, 2015), KINDERTOTENLIEDER de Gustav Mahler, INTO THE DARK de Karol Beffa, LA PETITE FILLE AUX ALLUMETTES d’August Enna, Théâtre de la Coupe d’Or, Rochefort, 2016), CORDELIA-REQUIESCAT d’après Shakespeare (Paris, Théâtre de Belleville, 2016), L’ÎLE DU RÊVE de Reynaldo Hahn (Paris, Athénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet, 2016), THE LITTLE SWEEP de Benjamin Britten (Rochefort, La Coupe d’Or, 2017) ALLADINE ET PALOMIDES de Maeterlinck (Rochefort, Cloître des Capucins, 2017). En 2018, il dirige l’acteur de cinéma Paul Hamy dans LE TIGRE BLEU DE L’EUPHRATE de Laurent Gaudé et reconstitue l’opéra inachevé de Claude Debussy LA CHUTE DE LA MAISON USHER d’après Edgar Allan Poe pour le centenaire du compositeur. En 2019, il assure la création française de l’opéra de Korngold, DIE STUMME SERENADE, aux côtés de David Stern et de son atelier lyrique Opera fuoco. En 2020, il dirige Antonin Monié, danseur du Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris dans le solo ARIEL EXTENDED sur une musique de Philippe Hersant. 

Résident à la Villa Médicis – Académie de France à Rome en 2015, écrivain-lauréat de la Fondation des Treilles créée par la mécène Anne Schlumberger en 2018 pour sa pièce WALDSTEIN, Olivier Dhénin Hữu construit essentiellement une œuvre théâtrale intimement liée à la musique : ainsi plusieurs collaborations avec Jacques Boisgallais qui écrit les musiques de scène d’ELLÉNORE, drame lyrique qui s’inspirait du “Sturm und Drang”, de sa trilogie L’ORDALIE et de CORDELIA REQUIESCAT d’après LE ROI LEAR représentée au Théâtre de Belleville à Paris pour les 400 ans de Shakespeare en 2016. Son récit UNALASKA est accompagné d’une musique de Philip Glass, tandis que les compositeurs Nicolas Bacri et Karol Beffa mettent en musique sa poésie. LA CANTATE DE TRISTAN DE LOONOIS, paraphrase d’après Thomas d’Angleterre ainsi que plusieurs élégies du recueil FROIDURE font l’objet d’une transposition lyrique par le compositeur belge Émile Daems. Avec le compositeur Benjamin Attahir, il écrit le monodrame pour voix d’enfant inspiré de la légende troyenne : LES LARMES D’ASTYANAX.

Lors de sa résidence d’écriture à la Fondation des Treilles, une exposition, L’ATELIER D’OLIVIER DHÉNIN, est présentée au Pôle culturel de Draguignan, retraçant vingt années d’écriture et de collaborations artistiques.

Olivier Dhénin Hữu – stage director

Olivier Dhénin Hữu graduated with a degree in literature from Paris VII University and is now a playwright and poet. Parallel to his degree in the literary arts, he studied music at the National Conservatory in Amiens and graduated in 2004. From 2006 to 2008 he was in charge of the artistic coordination at the Théâtre du Châtelet. From 2013 to 2015 he worked as artistic collaborator to Eric Vigner, director of the National Centre for Drama in Britany (Centre dramatique national de Bretagne). Now associate artist at the Scène Watteau from 2022, Olivier Dhénin Hữu is also a laureate of Villa Saigon, arts program of the French Institute for the writing of FROM AN OBLIVION LANDSCAPE, a dramatic oratorio imagined with the Italian composer Nigji Sanges Monticelli, which will be premiered at the Hô Chi Minh-Ville Opera in 2023.

In 2008 he directed THE DEATH OF TINTAGILES by Maeterlinck at Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles. He also worked to create ORPHANS by Rainer-Maria Rilke at the Cartoucherie de Vincennes (Théâtre du Chaudron, 2010), THE EERIE FEAST after Alain Fournier for the hundredth anniversary of THE LOST ESTATE (Rochefort, La Coupe d’Or, 2013), PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE by Claude Debussy (Paris, Réfectoire du Lycée Saint-Louis, 2014), JULIUS CÆSAR JONES by Malcolm Williamson (Opéra de Vichy, 2014). He has also worked on TRISTAN UND ISOLDE de Richard Wagner (CDDB Théâtre de Lorient, 2015), AN ICELAND FISHERMAN after Loti (Rochefort, 2015), CORDELIA after KING LEAR (Théâtre de Belleville, Paris, 2016), A DREAM ISLAND by Reynaldo Hahn (Athénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet, Paris, 2016), THE LITTLE SWEEP by Benjamin Britten (Théâtre de la Coupe d’Or, Rochefort, 2017), ALLADINE & PALOMIDES by Maeterlinck (Rochefort, Cloître des Capucins, 2017). In 2018, he directed the movie actor Paul Hamy in THE BLUE TIGER OF THE EUPHRATES by Laurent Gaudé and created a final version of the unachieved opera by Claude Debussy THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER after Edgar Allan Poe for the composer’s centenary. In 2019, he produced the French premiere of Korngold’s opera DIE STUMME SERENADE, alongside David Stern and Opera fuoco. In 2020, he directed a solo for Antonin Monié, a dancer from Paris National Opera Ballet : ARIEL EXTENDED with music by Philippe Hersant.

Resident at the Villa Medici – Academy of France in Rome in 2015, writer-laureate of the Fondation des Treilles created by patron Anne Schlumberger in 2018 for his play WALDSTEIN, Olivier Dhénin Hữu is essentially building a theatrical work intimately linked to music : thus several collaborations with Jacques Boisgallais who writes the stage music for ELLÉNORE, a lyrical drama that was inspired by the « Sturm und Drang », his trilogy L’ORDALIE and CORDELIA REQUIESCAT after KING LEAR performed at the Théâtre de Belleville in Paris for the 400 years of Shakespeare in 2016. His travelogue UNALASKA is accompanied by music by Philip Glass, while composers Nicolas Bacri and Karol Beffa set his poetry to music. LA CANTATE DE TRISTAN DE LOONOIS, a paraphrase of Thomas of England, as well as several elegies from the collection WINTERING, were transposed lyrically by the Belgian composer Émile Daems. With the composer Benjamin Attahir, he wrote the monodrama for child’s voice inspired by the Trojan legend: THE TEARS OF ASTYANAX.

During his writing residency at the Fondation des Treilles an exhibition, THE WORKSHOP OF OLIVIER DHÉNIN, is commissioned in Draguignan Arts Centre (Provence), retracing twenty years of writing and artistic collaborations.
